Our Story

WE’RE DREAMING UP A NEW KIND OF COMMUNITY

Our dream is to create a community at Owenwood where our neighbors are known, empowered, and inspired to use their gifts to transform Far East Dallas. While we do not bring all the answers or resources to an underserved community, we collaborate with many so our neighborhood can flourish. This is done through creative partnerships with existing nonprofits, bold initiatives born out of the dreams and talents of our neighbors, and the willingness to take risks for the sake of our community.

Owenwood is best understood in the friendships formed with strangers who are often our neighbors. We are committed to listening with curiosity and empathy, and our work is grounded in the relationships we continue to build with the community. Our mission is to cultivate hope and change through equitable work that represents our neighbors and friends. Our commitment is to form a new community grounded in justice, equality, and opportunity for all who live in Far East Dallas.

WE’RE A COMMUNITY FOR EAST DALLAS BY EAST DALLAS.

Owenwood Farm & Neighbor Space was formed as White Rock UMC’s second campus. Following the resurrection and renewed life of a once-dying church, we have come to know that the revitalization of urban churches is best accomplished when we take time to know the hopes, dreams, and challenges of our neighbors. This simple idea is often lost in the midst of anticipating or projecting what neighborhoods lack. We know our future is grounded in radical hospitality and the willingness to trust that we are already at work in the neighborhoods we love.

White Rock UMC helped launch Owenwood in 2017 and remain an essential partner in our work!
